On November 11, 1924, a small group of Lutherans gathered in a rented home across the
street from our present building. They worshiped and held Sunday School classes. During
this time they worked with the Iowa Conference to purchase the land we now own. On March
15, 1925 the Lutheran Community Chapel was dedicated. This room was the place this new
community could worship, Baptize, share Communion, and hold funerals. Forty two charter
members joined to establish Grace Lutheran Church on June 30, 1927. In 1930 a parish house
was built. By this time Grace's membership was 134 confirmed members, 103 non-confirmed
members. In 1956 the new sanctuary and fellowship hall was dedicated. The church had a
vision of reaching out to the neighborhood and working with children, so a gym was
included in these plans, and is still used extensively. As the church grew, more space was
needed. In 1966 the present building was remodeled, and the education unit was expanded.
Soon an elevator was added, in addition to air conditioning. A new organ was added in
1986. In 1991 a task force explored the needs of our growing ministry, and recommended a
variety of music be added for Sunday worship, have an increased staff, and make Grace
fully handicapped accessible. The land west of the church was purchased in 1993, enabling
Grace to expand its parking lot.
In 1990
Grace accepted the call to bring in Lutheran Campus Ministry at Drake University into its
family. Drake students continue to worship at Grace and participate in various activities.
In 1999 a second task force solidified mission and facility needs and Grace unanimously
agreed to form a building committee. Their plan, "Building for Mission," is
becoming a reality.
In 2000 we
got the opportunity to host "La Voz de Esperanza" as an extension of our
ministry. The Esperanza worship is lead in Spanish each Sunday. Our youth programs, at
times, have joined together, and we have some shared times of fellowship and
learning.
In
2002 we finished a $3,000,000.00 renovation and expansion of the Grace facility.
This includes gathering space, a new large fellowship hall, and a 125 seat chapel called
"Esperanza chapel." |
