Grace Education

Confirmation

Grace holds classes in preparation for affirmation of baptism (confirmation) for youth in grades 6-8. The classes, which are taught by pastors and lay leaders, generally start in September and conclude at the start of Lent. They are held on Wednesday evenings. Confirmation occurs on Reformation Sunday in grade 9.

Graces uses the curriculum, Here We Stand, published by Augsburg Fortress, as the basis for instruction. It encourages students to deepen their faith through intentional study of the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) and New Testament, the 10 Commandments, the Lord’s Prayer, the Apostle’s Creed, and Lutheran church history. A typical class combines a presentation of a particular topic to all youth followed by discussion in small groups organized by grade.

The program also includes opportunities for:

  • Worship reflection (sermon notes)
  • Participation in worship as an acolyte and in other ways. Youth acolyte between 8 and 10 times a year.
  • Fellowship through youth group activities
  • The experience of living in Christian community by attending confirmation camp at Lutheran Lakeside, usually in the year following grade 8.

Parents receive support of their efforts to nurture their youth’s faith development through the use of supplementary take-home materials.

Sunday School

Sunday School classes are available for 3 year olds through senior high. Classes run from mid September to mid May. Highlights of the year include several service projects, monthly visits to our library for Bible stories, Bible presentations to our third grade youth, a Christmas program, and intergenerational events.

Children ages 3 through 2nd grade are taught using the Hands-On Bible Curriculum. This curriculum uses a unique approach to Christian education called active learning. Children participate in a variety of fun and memorable learning experiences that help them learn Bible truths and grow in God’s love.

Our 3rd grade through 8th grade youth are taught with Living the Good News Curriculum. This is a Lutheran Lectionary based curriculum that bridges our everyday stories with the timeless stories of our Christian faith – a celebration of God’s unending love and grace.

Our senior high youth experience a variety of faith-rich curriculum and activities.

Bible Study

We offer several opportunities to study and discuss the Scriptures. Tuesday morning at 8:45, a lively group gathers to participate in Bible study led by one of the pastors. The Sunday morning education hour often includes Bible study or guest speakers on a variety of topics. On Wednesday evenings from 6-7, join a group to study the lectionary for the upcoming Sunday. (Groups do not meet in summer)

Library

The Grace Lutheran Church Library is open to all members of the congregation. It is a spacious, comfortable and inviting space to read, study, meditate, and browse the many shelves of books for all ages. Books and other materials may be checked out for four weeks. Storytimes for small children are offered regularly. The room also serves as a meeting place for small groups.

Super Wednesday

Our elementary youth are welcome to attend this Wednesday night program during the school year. This evening offers children a second opportunity during the week to learn about Bible stories, do crafts, and play games in the gym. Musical groups rehearse and supper is provided. Special activities are offered for children 3-5 years old.
